What can one say, a great SIM worthy of high praise in amongst the commercial ones. And what a product, considering that it is managed by a few, and supported by many. And all this for free, barring the cost of the bandwidth needed to download the core SIM, 229MB, inclusive of basic scenery and a number of aircraft (about 20). Extra scenery and aircraft can be further downloaded. The scenery is accurate, although static, noticeable with AI boats and ships on water, they never move. The focus is on the aircraft and flight dynamics. The clouds are now 3D, although experimental, so adding to the "real" feel, but the best is that this is an extremely accurate SIM. And it thrives on decent hardware. Try a carrier deck landing with the F-14 tomcat supplied in the basic core download, and you will quickly appreciate the accuracy of this SIM. Get it wrong and that's it, as in the real world, you end up "dead" virtually. There is over 200 aircraft available for download, the last I checked and this is growing. There is also a 4 DVD pack available for purchase, 1 DVD for the core SIM, and more than 200 aircraft, and 3 DVD's for the world scenery, about 50GB of space for a full install. Although this is a free product, they clearly advertise that the purchasable version is simply to pay for infrastructure, the media and shipping, and the balance of the income goes to worthy world charities. From Beginner to Advanced, and with some on strict budgets, this SIM comes highly recommended. You cannot get better for zero purchase cost.

An expensive add-on, costs the same as the SIM it is designed for, FSX and FSX Deluxe. Does patch FSX with SP1 and SP2 and some extra, so will save those that have expensive and slow internet connections, 208MB for SP1 and 170MB for SP2. Also found although adding some classic aircraft and helicopters, as well as pylon racing and stunt flying, does not fix the scenery and flight model flaws as mentioned in my review of FSX Deluxe. Again having said the above this is a must have add-on, both from a "fix" perspective, and adding some highly detailed aircraft models to your collection. This is also true, for those programmers out there, now creating scenery, aircraft etc. that only work with FSX with Acceleration. So if you want access to these available add-ons then it is a given to add this to your collection

Quite an expensive SIM compared to others, and now possibly the last from Microsoft. And why Microsoft has to go and change the core, making it generally incompatible with previous products. I mean this from a programmers perspective. On it's initial launch and for quite a while thereafter, it had very slow support for the community to program, design and create both pay-ware and freeware add-ons, because of these changes. This has now changed and it is a SIM of note today. Unfortunately it suffers the same scenery problems as it's predecessor Flight Simulator 2004. As an example my country is unrecognizable in the most critical and important of natural landmarks. Thankfully some resourceful locals have corrected this and offer these add-ons for free. This is also true of others around the world offering GREAT add-ons. Also very important to note, the flight model is inaccurate and the flaws can be found very quickly. This is especially noticeable when doing classic and world recognized stunts in a decent stunt aircraft model. I have found I cannot execute a number of these maneuvers correctly, and this is annoying. Even with the addition of the commercial Acceleration add-on, this is not fixed. But having said all of that above, this still remains a great SIM to own, from beginner to serious SIMMER, and as usual an incredible selection of free-ware, pay-ware and customization available, as well as utilities. Barring the above mentioned flaws, many will come to enjoy having this SIM in their collection

Still a great SIM, very good value for money if you can still get it (my indicated price was a few years ago, could be got for as little as $10 / ZAR100), and plenty of free third party support and add-ons. An incredible list of aircraft and scenery available all over the web, with many enthusiasts supporting and using this SIM presently. Sadly when compared to more up to date SIM's, it shows it's age, especially the scenery and water. I found my own country layout terrible with unrecognizable features, but after finding some good local add-ons, this helped to improve the SIM. Nostalgia maybe but glad to have it in my collection.

In my opinion possibly the best SIM on the market. Out of the box dynamic scenery, great flight model, works on the majority of hardware and operating systems supported are Windows, Linux and MacOS, from the same set of disks. And the free aircraft and scenery is growing by the day, and of a very high standard. Payware aircraft are incredible, the attention to detail is mind blowing, such as the P-38 Lightning and Hawker Hurricane. I have both, and I can vouch for them. The advertising for the Hurricane is that it pushes the detail of X-Plane to the limit, and my experience is so, without killing the SIM, to an unusable frame rate. In my books a must have for anyone serious or wnating to get serious about SIMMING.

For anyone wanting a real challenge and is a true propeller head, this is it. Very complex model and complex to learn. I quickly learned to have a lot of respect for the real world pilots that fly this beast. Awesome aircraft, and especially if you love "choppers" as I do.
